An American-Armenian writer added new books to the bookshelves of the National Children's Library in Yerevan on Wednesday, while her target audience enjoyed the fantasyland environment while listening to stories from "Fairytales". Fira Zefa Akian presented her 3-volume works ‘Hekiatner' (Fairytales) in the Khnko-Aper Library. "I aim to only teach children kindness and the ability to think; I want to sow great love in them towards the nature," says Akian, who donated 100 books to the library. Originally from Armenia, Akian has lived in the United States the past 15 years. She said that both in Armenia and Los Angeles multi-plot children's literature is lacking, having been overcome by computer attractions. The author hopes the 18 fairytales she wrote contribute to Armenian children's interest in books. Akian is planning to donate 150 out of 1,500 illustrated books to ‘Zatik' orphanage, as well as to the libraries of Gyumri and Nagorno-Karabakh. The books are written in Armenian and published in Los Angeles. Vrezh Varzhapetyan, 14 who was at Wednesday's presentation says that he is very inspired by the new books. "When you get engrossed in a book, it seems as if sitting in a room you travel all over the world," the boy says. The Khnko-Aper library like many libraries in Armenia lacks appropriate financing. Annually it gets about $13,500 for acquiring new books but still it is not enough to renew the already existing literature. Currently it has half a million copies, according to deputy director Shushan Voskanyan. Hasmik Karapetyan, director of the Avetik Isahakyan Library, which has 31,000 members of whom 7,000 are children, mentions that one of their problems is that the series of world children's literature is left incomplete after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
